Description
This is the Rizzoli art book Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas, the landmark survey of Douglas’s work as Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party. The illustrated cover/jacket presents Douglas’s bold graphic style, high-contrast figures, political caricature, and community imagery, with title typography in strong black block letters. This edition’s cover badge notes a new introduction by Colette Gaiter; the project is the well-known volume associated with editor/introducer Sam Durant.
Interior and flap material in the photos frame Douglas’s practice: bold graphics collaged from photographs and drawings, widely circulated through The Black Panther newspaper and posters, addressing poverty, policing, and community struggle. The dust-jacket flap describes a chronological collection with over 200 full-color illustrations and contributions from voices such as Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, and Danny Glover. Sample pages reproduce Black Panther newspaper covers and related graphics, including sharp political caricature work.
Photos also show the striking red board/cover treatment with a black silhouette of a woman and child, plus a large colorful fold-out style poster image featuring Douglas’s leaping panther and raised-fist figures (fold lines visible). Overall condition is excellent, sharp corners, clean covers, bright color, and crisp pages in the shots. An essential modern art-and-history volume for collectors of graphic design, Black Power visual culture, or twentieth-century political art.
